How Bar Kochba helps to understand the Antichrist

Revelation 13:16–18 shows that the Beast’s control system has three layers:

  1. Physical – a mark you receive.
  2. Spiritual – a name you serve.
  3. Economic/Digital – a number you depend on.
Simon Bar Kochba’s coinage during the 2nd-century Jewish revolt (132–135 AD) provides a strong historical precedent for how a political/religious leader could create a mark or coin symbolizing allegiance, foreshadowing what Revelation warns will occur in the last days. Let me break this down:

Bar Kochba and His “Mark”

Historical Context: During the Bar Kochba revolt against Rome, Simon Bar Kochba minted his own coins to establish a new Jewish state independent of Roman rule.

These coins replaced the image of the Roman Emperor with Jewish symbols (Temple, lyre, palm branches).

Purpose of the Coins: They were not merely currency but political and religious tokens of allegiance.

His Coins

  • During the revolt, Bar Kochba issued his own currency, overstriking Roman coins with Hebrew inscriptions such as:
    • “For the Freedom of Jerusalem”
    • “Year 1/2 of the Redemption of Israel”
  • These coins often depicted Jewish symbols like the Temple façade, trumpets, palm branches, and the Ark, symbolizing the restoration of Jewish sovereignty.

Death and Legacy

  • Bar Kochba died in 135 or 136 CE, likely during the final battle at Betar, the last stronghold of the rebellion.
  • Initially hailed as a national hero and potential Messiah, later Jewish texts, such as the Talmud, refer to him more critically as Bar Koziba (“son of a lie”) after his failed revolt, implying his messianic claims were false.

Using these coins meant rejecting Caesar’s authority and pledging loyalty to Bar Kochba as the “Prince of Israel” (hailing him as Messiah)

Significance in History

  • The Bar Kochba Revolt marked the end of Jewish political independence until the modern era (1948).
  • After the revolt:
    • Jews were banned from Jerusalem except on Tisha B’Av (a day of mourning).
    • Judea was renamed “Syria Palaestina” by Rome to erase Jewish ties to the land.
  • Simon bar Kochba remains a symbol of Jewish resistance and nationalism, though also a tragic reminder of the consequences of failed messianic movements. So but most importantly this guy was the Antichrist of that time.

Revelation 13:16–17 describes an end-time system where:

“No man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.”

  • Coins as Marks of Allegiance:
    • In the 1st and 2nd centuries, currency was often stamped with the ruler’s name or image, functioning as a “mark” of loyalty to their reign.
    • Bar Kochba’s coins countered Caesar’s coins, creating a parallel “mark-based economy.”
    • To trade in his controlled territories, you would have to accept his currency and leadership, just like people had to accept Caesar’s coin (bearing Caesar’s “mark”).
    • Solomon also was known for 666 talents of gold annually, a mark of his reign. And this could symbolize those coming after as a promised Son of David bringing in the wealth of the Jewish kingdom: 1 Kings 10:14 KJV Now the weight of gold that came to Solomon in one year was six hundred threescore and six talents of gold.” In this we see Bar Kochba wanting to be recognized as such.

A Precursor to Modern Economic Control

  • Physical Mark → Coin → Digital Currency:
    • In history, rulers marked currency to enforce economic and political allegiance.
    • In the future, the Beast system may evolve from coins and seals to digital tokens or implants tied to one’s identity, without which no one can buy or sell.
    • Just as Bar Kochba’s followers had to use his coin, end-time believers and unbelievers will face a forced choice of allegiance.
  • Prophetic Pattern:
    • Ancient: Marked coins = allegiance to a ruler or kingdom.
    • Modern/Future: Digital mark or implant = allegiance to the Beast’s global system.
