THE NAME

The name Baal means lord, that is master, owner, husband. The Bible says in Jeremiah 23:27 that Israel had forgotten God’s name for Baal. Hosea 2:16 says “And it shall be at that day, saith the LORD, that thou shalt call me Ishi; and shalt call me no more Baali.” The name ‘Ishi’ can mean ‘man’ or ‘husband’, but it can also mean ‘Yish’iy’ to save (1Chron.2:31), and to deliver which come from the word ‘yasha’ which means salvation, that is the name ‘Yhowshuwa’, YHVH-saved.

When YHVH decided to come to earth he chose Yehoshua, or Yeshua, which means as we read earlier YHVH-saved, or Jehovah saves. The Father to son, The “Y” chromosome in Christ!

In English Yeshua comes to us as Joshua, or Jeshua. But the Greek form is ‘Iesous’, this is where the name Jesus comes from. Notice the Greeks use “I” for “J”. The letter “J” itself comes from German speaking people groups related to Shem. Germans used “Ja” like we use “Ya” or “Yes”. The name Jesus comes from a Greek translation of the Aramaic short form (Yeshu’a), which was the real name of Jesus.1 As an English name, Joshua has been in use since the Protestant Reformation.
