Who is the Great City in the book of Revelation?

Revelation 11:8 says, “And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified.” Jerusalem was the city Jesus was crucified in.

Revelation 14:8 says, “And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.” Again, we see that GREAT CITY here identified as Babylon, which was first century Jerusalem.

Revelation 16:19 says “And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath.” This could be future concerning Jerusalem. The great city doesn’t change identity, it’s Jerusalem.

Revelation 17:18 says “And the woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth.” Again, Jerusalem

Revelation 18:10 says “Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.” Jerusalem identified as Babylon at its destruction in A.D.70

Revelation 18:20-21 says “Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye holy apostles and prophets; for God hath avenged you on her. And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all.” The earthly Jerusalem was destroyed in A.D.70 “found no more at all” meaning that old covenant system. Jeremiah 3:16 says “And it shall come to pass, when ye be multiplied and increased in the land, in those days, saith the LORD, they shall say no more, The ark of the covenant of the LORD: neither shall it come to mind: neither shall they remember it; neither shall they visit it; neither shall that be done any more.” The old covenant system would be no more! Isaiah 65:17-18 says “For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind. But be ye glad and rejoice for ever in that which I create: for, behold, I create Jerusalem a rejoicing, and her people a joy.” The new heavens and new earth is the new Jerusalem. Keep in mind that this Jerusalem is spoken of in Galatians 4, and Hebrews 12. The heavenly Jerusalem (Rev.21).

Matthew 23:35-36 says “That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the EARTH, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar. Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.” The generation Christ was speaking to. If Jerusalem isn’t the great city spoken of in the book of Revelation, how can we reconcile what Jesus said in Matthew 23-24 which clearly indicates that it is? We must be careful to pay attention to the sayings of Christ because they give us clear direction. Notice how Matthew 23 and Revelation 18 are compared: Revelation 18:24 says “And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the EARTH.” This again is first century Jerusalem.
