Revelation 9:1-2a says “And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit. And he opened the bottomless pit…” This verse is important to our understanding of where we are as pertaining to the timeline of eschatological events. Revelation 20:1 says “And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.” What’s happening in Revelation 20:1 is the binding of Satan for one thousand years. Please understand that the thousand years are symbolic and that it represents an extended period of time. But what’s happing in Revelation 9:1 is the opening of the bottomless pit AFTER the thousand years are finished: Revelation 20:7 says “And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison.” Always remember the book of Revelation is not in chronological order.
The Bible says that “…the sun and air were darkened….” Ex.10:4,5, says “…behold tomorrow will I bring the locust into thy coast: And they shall cover the face of the earth, that one cannot be able to see the earth: and they shall eat the residue of that which is escaped, which remaineth unto you from the hail, and shall eat every tree which groweth for you out of the field:” This was the eighth plague that fell upon the Egyptians, and if you noticed the locust would be multiplied to the point that they wouldn’t be able to see. The locust had come to eat what the last plague didn’t destroy, the trees. But in Revelation, the locust came to torment men for five months. When these locusts came out of the pit, they caused a darkness to spread over the sun, and a darkness to spread over the faces of men.
